The Cotswolds countryside around Tetbury is perfect for walking and cycling and there’s plenty to do further afield for active families, including family cycle rides and walks, swimming and activities at leisure centres, water-sports around the Cotswold Water Park, horse-riding and of course just enjoying playing in the great outdoors!

Walking


Whether you are a serious walker, a casual rambler or an occasional stroller, walking is the best way to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the area around Tetbury or further afield in the Cotswolds.

Tetbury And District Footpath Group walk every Tuesday April to October, open to everyone and often take in the local hospitality! They also organise a walking festival in April each year. Click here to visit their website for more information.

If you want some experienced guidance and expert interpretation of the landscape, then why not join one of the regular guided walks led by Cotswolds Conservation Board voluntary wardens www.cotswoldsaonb.org.uk

There are also professional guides, such as Cotswold Guided Walks, who charge for longer or more specialised walks. There are a number of Long Distance Footpaths crossing the local area including the Monarchs Way, Macmillan Way and the Palladian Way. The nearest point to access or leave the Cotswold Way is at Coaley Peak approximately 10 miles from Tetbury.

With so many quiet country lanes and secluded bridleways the Tetbury Visitor Information Centre has the relevant Ordnance Survey Explorer OS168 or OL168 maps you need to devise your own route. Dr Alison Grierson-Brookes Alison lives and works in Tetbury where you will find her walking and exploring the ancient landscape. She began her career at the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff where she participated in daring cave excavations. In 2005, she joined the award-winning Corinium Museum as Head of Collections and Curator of Archaeology.


After a successful museum career 2022 saw Alison follow her dream to create a venture combining her passion of walking and archaeology.

Cycling

With sweeping views across open countryside, quiet lanes lined with stone walls and wildflowers along the hedgerows, the countryside around Tetbury offers a perfect cycling experience. The terrain is best described as gentle and rolling, so that any hills are rewarded with a free wheel afterwards. Small villages with pubs and inns offer a welcomed opportunity to take a well-earned (or not!) break for food and drink.

Bainton Bikes cycle hire in Tetbury on a self-service 24 hours a day 7 days a week basis, from a number of hubs in the town. By simply using an App and Bluetooth on your smart phone you can unlock and lock the bikes at your leisure. With the expression ‘Coffee makes the wheels go round’ they have coupled a bike shop with a coffee bar. Visitors are able to join one of the Veloton group rides which are a great way to meet fellow cyclists whilst gliding through the beautiful Cotswold countryside, in around 90 minutes, so maybe not for the feint-hearted. Tetbury Goods Shed parkrun – Weekly Free 5km Timed Run

What is Tetbury Goods Shed parkrun?
It is a 5km run – it’s you against the clock.

Where is it?
The parkrun is held every Saturday at 9:00am.

When is it?
The event takes place at Tetbury Goods Shed, Gumstool Hill, Tetbury, GL8 8DG. See Course page for more details.

What does it cost to join in?
Nothing – it’s free! but please register before your first run. Only ever register with parkrun once. Don’t forget to bring a printed copy of your barcode (request a reminder). If you forget it, you won’t get a time.

How fast do I have to be?
We all run for our own enjoyment. Please come along and join in whatever your pace!

How can I become a volunteer?

Golf

Tetbury makes a perfect destination for a golfing break with several golf clubs within a few minutes’ drive from the town.

Westonbirt
Westonbirt has a picturesque and challenging golf course open to members of the local golfing community and beyond, offering both membership and pay-as-you-play green fees. Stinchcombe Hill Golf Club
Stinchcombe Hill Golf Club is located high up in the hills above the Severn Valley just 20 minutes from Tetbury. Minchinhampton Golf Club
There are three courses at the Minchinhampton Golf Club set high on the rolling Cotswolds just 15 minutes away.
